Tips by service type

Not all salon services are equal in complexity or time investment. Here's how tipping norms break down by what you're getting done:

Standard haircut ($30-$75): 15-20%. A routine cut takes 30-45 minutes and is the most common salon service. If your stylist consistently nails your style, 20% keeps that relationship strong.

Color treatment ($100-$250): 20%. Color is time-intensive (1.5-3+ hours), requires specialized skill, and uses expensive products. The percentage stays the same, but the dollar amount is naturally higher because the service costs more.

Highlights/balayage ($150-$350): 20%. These multi-step processes take 2-4 hours and require significant technical skill. Some clients tip 25% for exceptional color work because the results are dramatic and the stylist's artistry is on display.

Blowout/styling ($35-$65): 15-20%. Shorter service, less technical complexity, but still a skill-based personal service that warrants a standard tip.

Tipping etiquette nuances

Multiple service providers: If a separate colorist and stylist work on you, tip each one individually based on their portion of the service. If the colorist did $150 of work and the stylist did $75, tip the colorist $30 and the stylist $15 (at 20%).

The shampoo person: $3-$5 cash, separate from your main tip. This person is usually an assistant or apprentice at a lower pay rate. A small cash tip means a lot. Hand it to them directly.

The salon owner question: Old etiquette said don't tip the owner because they set prices. That norm has largely disappeared. In 2026, most salon owners accept and appreciate tips. Tip them the same 15-20% you'd tip any stylist.

Holiday tipping: During December, many clients give their regular stylist an extra-generous tip (often the cost of one full service) or a gift as a year-end appreciation.
