The anatomy of a restaurant bill

A restaurant bill has three components, and understanding each one matters when you're splitting or verifying the total:

Subtotal: The sum of all food and drink items before tax or tip. This is the number you see when you add up individual menu prices. It's also what most etiquette experts say you should base your tip on.

Tax: Sales tax on food varies by state and sometimes by city. It ranges from 0% (Oregon, Montana) to over 10% in some jurisdictions. Some states exempt groceries but tax restaurant meals at a higher rate. Check your local rate — it affects the total more than most people realize.

Tip: A percentage of the subtotal for service. The standard in 2026 is 18-20% for sit-down restaurants. For our tipping guide with breakdowns by service type, see the full guide.

Tip calculation shortcuts

You don't need a calculator for basic tip math. These mental shortcuts work every time:

20% tip: Move the decimal one place left (10%), then double it. $73 bill → $7.30 → $14.60 tip.

15% tip: Calculate 10%, then add half. $73 → $7.30 + $3.65 = $10.95.

18% tip: Calculate 20% and 15%, then pick the middle. $73 → between $10.95 and $14.60 → about $13.15.

25% tip: Calculate 10%, then multiply by 2.5. $73 → $7.30 × 2.5 = $18.25. Or calculate 20% ($14.60) and add half the 10% ($3.65) = $18.25.

Splitting strategies for different group sizes

Groups of 2-4: simple math

For small groups, divide the total by the number of people. Even split works when orders are similar. If someone had significantly more or less, use the uneven split calculator for fairness.

Groups of 5-8: the Venmo approach

One person puts the full bill on their card, then requests payment from everyone else via Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App. This avoids the embarrassment of asking for 7 separate checks and is faster for the server. Calculate each person's share using the bill split calculator.

Groups of 8+: separate checks or auto-gratuity

Ask for separate checks when ordering — many restaurants accommodate this. For parties over 6-8, restaurants often add automatic 18-20% gratuity. Check the bill carefully: if auto-gratuity is included, you don't need to add an additional tip (though rounding up is appreciated for exceptional service). Our fair splitting guide covers large-group strategies in detail.

Common billing mistakes to watch for

Wrong items: Verify every item on the bill matches what you ordered. Mistakes happen — an extra appetizer, a premium version of what you ordered, or items from another table.

Double-charged items: Especially common with drinks that get ordered throughout the meal. Count items against what you remember ordering.

Auto-gratuity not noticed: If an 18% service charge is already included and you add another 20% tip, you've tipped 38%. Always check for "service charge," "gratuity," or "SVR CHG" on the bill.

Incorrect tax rate: Compare the tax line to your local rate × the subtotal. If the math doesn't match, ask your server to verify.
