Full split table: $250 bill, 4 people

Tip %Tip AmountTotalPer Person (4 ways)
10%$25.00$275.00$68.75
15%$37.50$287.50$71.88
18%$45.00$295.00$73.75
20%$50.00$300.00$75.00
22%$55.00$305.00$76.25
25%$62.50$312.50$78.13

The range from 15% to 25% is $6.25 per person. On a $250 dinner, that's genuinely minor. If the service was good, 20% ($75 each) is the move. Great service? Round up to $78 or $80 each — your server will notice and appreciate the extra few dollars.

The alcohol problem on a $250 bill

$250 for four people almost always involves drinks. A bottle of wine ($40-$80) or a couple of cocktails each ($12-$18 per drink) can easily account for $80-$120 of that total. If one person doesn't drink, an even $75 split means they're subsidizing everyone else's alcohol. That's where things get uncomfortable.

Two approaches work well:

Split food evenly, drinks separately. If food subtotal is $170 and drinks are $80, split the $170 four ways ($42.50 each) and each drinker adds their drink costs. The non-drinker pays $42.50 + tip instead of $62.50 + tip. Fair, and takes about 30 seconds to calculate.

Full itemized split. Each person tallies their food and drinks, adds proportional tip, and pays their own total. The uneven bill split tool handles this in seconds.

When one person covers it

At $300 total (20% tip), one card and three Venmos is the smoothest play. The card-payer puts $300 on their card and collects $75 from each of the other three. If someone wants to pay cash, they hand over $75 and the card-payer adjusts.

A practical tip from someone who splits bills constantly: designate the card-payer at the start of the meal. Waiting until the check arrives creates that awkward moment where everyone stares at the bill. Just say "I'll put it on my card, everyone send me $75" — done. For recurring groups, the bill splitting guide has strategies that eliminate friction entirely.

The CFPB's payment app guide covers safe practices for digital settlements. For tipping etiquette at higher-end restaurants, Emily Post's guide is still the authority.
